Disclosure: Digital Business Card is an independent store. We work with several digital business card platform partners and may earn a commission when you buy through us. This never changes your price. This store sells a one-time card, compared below. Every free-plan fact comes from the vendor's own website, checked on 31 October 2026.

"Free" is a fair offer. Several digital business card apps have free plans that do a lot, and for some people they are all they will ever need.

But free plans are built to lead somewhere. They usually hold back a few features that matter once you use your card for work. This guide explains what free plans typically limit, when paying makes sense, and when paying once beats both free and a subscription.

For the full field of options, see our guide to the best digital business card.

What free plans do well

Free plans are not a trick. The ones we checked are genuinely useful.

  • HiHello Personal is free with no time limit. It includes 2 cards, sharing by QR, widget, email, SMS and WhatsApp, wallet passes, an email signature and virtual backgrounds.
  • Blinq Free includes two cards, unlimited sharing, wallet passes, an email signature and virtual backgrounds.
  • Wave Connect Free includes a card, unlimited sharing, wallet passes, individual analytics and a lead capture form.
  • Popl says it offers a free plan for individuals.

If you are a student, a job seeker or simply trying the idea, start there.

What free plans typically limit

Each vendor draws the line differently, so check the plan you are looking at. These are the limits we saw most often on vendors' own pricing pages.

Branding

Custom colours, fonts, branded QR codes and removing the vendor's branding are usually paid. Blinq puts custom colours and branding removal on Premium. HiHello puts your colours and fonts on Professional. Wave Connect puts branded QR codes and branding removal on Pro.

Analytics

Some free plans leave analytics out. HiHello's card analytics start on Professional. Wave Connect is an exception: its free plan includes individual analytics.

Lead capture and scanning

Capturing other people's details is a common upgrade. HiHello's free plan scans 5 paper cards or badges a month, rising on paid plans. Blinq's universal contact scanner starts on Premium. Popl says lead capture, AI enrichment and event reporting are on paid plans.

Export

Getting your contacts out matters if you ever switch. Blinq puts CSV export on Premium. Check this before you build your network on any free plan.

Number of cards

Free plans often cap how many cards you can create. HiHello and Blinq both allow two on their free plans.

How your data is used

Free or paid, read the vendor's privacy policy. It tells you how your details and your contacts' details are stored and used. We have not reviewed each vendor's policy here, so we make no claims about them.

The hidden cost of free: switching later

The biggest cost of a free plan is often not money. It is what happens when you outgrow it.

By then your link is in your email signature, your social bios and your messages. Your QR code may be on slides or signs. If you move to another app, every one of those needs updating. If you stay, you move to a yearly subscription.

So think a year ahead. If you expect to need branding, analytics or lead tools soon, it can be easier to start on the plan you will end up on.

A worked example

Take a freelance photographer. She starts on a free plan and shares her card at a few shoots. Six months later she wants her own colours, a gallery that looks like her brand and analytics to see which links people press.

On HiHello she would move to Professional at $72 a year. On Blinq she would move to Premium at $87.99 a year. Over three years that is $216 or $263.97. Brand Presence here gives her templates, a gallery and analytics for $72 once.

If she never needed those features, the free plan would have been the right call all along.

Free plans for teams

Free plans are mostly for individuals. HiHello says it has no free plan for teams, but offers a 14-day free trial of Business for teams of five or more. Team plans elsewhere are usually paid per person.

For a small team, compare the per-person yearly price with a one-time profile per person. Our HiHello alternative guide works through a team of five.

When free is enough

A free plan is the right choice if:

  • you need a basic profile and a QR code;
  • you do not mind the vendor's branding on your card;
  • you do not need analytics or lead capture;
  • you are trying digital cards for the first time; or
  • you are a student or job seeker on no budget.

When paying makes sense

Pay when the limits start to cost you something:

  • you want your card to look like your brand, not the app's;
  • you need to see how your profile is used;
  • you collect leads and need to follow them up;
  • you want to export your contacts; or
  • you are buying for a team that should look consistent.

When paying once beats "free"

Paying once makes most sense when you need paid features and expect to keep your card for years.

Compare the options over three years. HiHello Professional costs $216. Blinq Premium costs $263.97. Brand Presence here costs $72, once. Business Add-ons, with lead tools, costs $120 once.

A free plan still costs nothing. But if you would upgrade within a year, the real comparison is between a subscription and one payment. Over time, the one payment wins on cost.

Questions to ask before you choose a free plan

  1. What exactly is limited, and will I hit that limit?
  2. Can I export my contacts on the free plan?
  3. Does the free plan show the vendor's branding on my card?
  4. What does the first paid plan cost per year?
  5. What happens to my card if I stop using the app?

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free digital business card?

Yes. HiHello, Blinq and Wave Connect publish free plans, and Popl says it has one for individuals. They cover the basics, with limits on features such as branding, analytics or export.

What do free digital business cards leave out?

It varies by vendor. The most common limits are custom branding, analytics, lead capture, contact export and the number of cards.

Is a free digital business card good enough for business?

For a basic profile, often yes. If you need your own branding, analytics or lead tools, a paid plan or one-time card is usually better.

Is paying once better than a free plan?

Only if you need features the free plan leaves out. If you do, one payment costs less over time than a yearly subscription.

Can a team use a free digital business card?

Usually only as individuals. HiHello, for example, says it has no free plan for teams. Team features are normally on paid, per-person plans.

Does this store have a free plan?

No. Both plans are one-time payments, with unlimited edits and analytics included.

Do free digital business cards expire?

The plans we checked have no time limit. Read our guide do QR codes expire? to see why some QR codes stop working.
